Henry Russell

JV Coach, Varsity Assistant

Since 1991, Henry Russell (aka Russ) has been involved in the sport of volleyball both as a professional beach player and as a coach.  Currently he is the RUHS JV head coach and Varsity Boys Volleyball assistant coach and has coached for USA Volleyball, and several other South Bay programs, including South Bay Beach Volleyball Club, Evolution and now is boys head coach at SCVC.

Henry was a player on the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) tour for 7 years (‘92-‘99) and was one of the top ranked players at the time.He was crowned "Champion" when he won the 1997 AVP Cape Cod Grand Slam Open Tournament; with his partner Mark Kerins, defeating Mike Whitmarsh and Mike Dodd, not only becoming the first Floridian to win an AVP tournament, but also the first USMC veteran on the AVP to do so.

In 1996, he was awarded AVP's Most Improved Player and in 1999 was labeled as having the “Best Hands on the Beach” by Volleyball Monthly.

He says he learned early in his AVP career that there is a vast difference between being a good player and a great one; being a great player is not a function of circumstance, it is largely a result of a conscious choice. He has both won and lost to this sport’s greatest players in the world which has made him appreciate all that this sport has to give and teach, and he is ready to pass the lessons he has learned on to the next generation.

Henry is the father to two boys, husband to a wonderful wife, professional within his career and a Marine Corps veteran.

Andrew "Bean" Torrez
Assistant Coach & Shares the title of "#1 RUHS Sports Fan"

Coach's Comments: Said best by Duncan Avery, and still true: "A lifetime Seahawk, Bean is a 2004 graduate of Redondo Union High School. He holds the highest lifetime serving percentage of 1.000% for any Seahawk serving one ball for an ace against North High. Bean is the heart and soul of this program and brings an energy to the gym that nobody else can. We are truly lucky to have Bean on board for another year."
